What is the Keto Diet?
The ketogenic diet, shortened to keto, is based on a low carb high fat food intake. When we reduce the amount of carbs we consume and increase the amount of fat, our bodies go into what’s known as ketosis.
Without getting too sciency on you, typically, our bodies will burn stored sugars (that come from carbohydrates) for energy, however, when we’re in the state of ketosis, our livers turn fats into ketones, which we use for energy instead.
Are there different types of Keto Diets?
…you mean to say there isn’t just one type of keto diet?
Oh no, in fact, there’s a multitude of ways to follow the keto diet, designed to help fit into anyone's lifestyle. Here are the four most widely followed:
Standard Ketogenic Diet (SKD)
This is the most popular of the four and often the one most of us will start off with whilst we’re finding our feet. The SKD diet typically consists of 10% carbs, 20% protein and 70% fat.
Cyclical Ketogenic Diet (CKD)
Most commonly used by people who have specific goals; typically weight and hormonal management, the CKD way of keto consists of 5 ketogenic days, followed by 2 high carb days.
Targeted Ketogenic Diet (TKD)
More frequently used by those with active lifestyles and looking to maintain their weight, the TKD has a higher carb intake, ideal for those who take part in regular exercise.
High Protein Ketogenic Diet
This version requires a higher protein intake, the split tends to be 60% fat, 35% protein and 5% carbs. The high protein ketogenic diet is ideal for those looking to gain or maintain muscle mass.
